Precious

"How did America fall in love with Precious?":A film about a fat, abused black teenager which won plaudits at the Sundance and Cannes festivals is tipped for Oscar success

The jury is still out with me. What's so interesting is that my student have been waiting for this film, based the novel "Push" by Sapphire, to come out. These are teenagers who usually won't flock to a film that's remotely political in nature or this dark. Well, unless they are tricked into it. I wonder how far Lee Daniels pushed the melodrama. In the trailer below I am pretty sure poor Precious Jones gets hit with a frying pan about 5 times. Some in "academia" like to knock Sapphire and slam-poetry, but at the end of the day if this is what engages teenagers to get involved in the arts, writing, or to discover poetry then why are we trying to bring it down

This piece in the Atlantic got me thinking about how much better late '80s & '90s hip hop music videos used to be.
